OmniRide is changing its western services effective December 9, 2019. This is the most significant service change in the history of Western Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park. Please see the below highlights from Executive Director Bob Schneider.


Commuter Routes:

·        Route and trip names are changing from a combination of letters and numbers, e.g.: G-100, G-101, G-102; G-200, G201, etc. to a simplified “Route 611.  Route 612”.  NEW riders will find this much easier to understand 

·        OmniRide is moving one of the route segments from the Cushing Road Commuter Lot (at Balls Ford/234) to the new University Boulevard Commuter Lot because Cushing Rd is at 98-100% capacity and has illegal parking on a daily basis.  University lot currently has about 700 available spaces

Ø  Customers who don’t want to drive to University can still ride to DC from Cushing, but will have a 2 block walk to the Metro Station in DC

Ø  With this shift to University, OmniRide is able to double the number of trips from Gainesville to the Pentagon and also increase DC coverage, with service about every 20-30 minutes in the morning.  The evening period is more spread out to enable later coverage

·        The Manassas Metro Express route that currently connects Manassas Mall with the Tysons Corner Metro will now start/end in downtown Manassas to create a one-seat ride for passengers


Local Routes:

·         Routes serving Manassas North, Manassas South, Manassas Park, and Prince William Parkway are changing significantly

Ø  OmniRide is relocating the Western transfer point from the Manassas Mall to “The Hub”—the name for a new transfer point close to the Prince William Courthouse in Historical Downtown Manassas

§   It is approximately a 7-10 minute walk from the downtown business district and very close to federal Social Security and courthouse offices

Ø  The three local routes (Manassas North, Manassas South and Manassas Park) have been redesigned to provide more direct access in and out of Manassas, and along key corridors (See attached flyer)

§  The old routing was designed mainly in the 1980s/1990s so the new routing emphasizes service near high density apartments, the shifting retail corridor along Liberia Ave (jobs/shopping), and community resources (i.e. Manassas Park Community Center)

§  Both the Manassas & Manassas Park VRE stations are served

§  These routes will operate fare-free through March 15, 2020 to give current riders time to adjust and encourage new passengers to try out options

Ø  OmniRide is also introducing OmniRide Access—the first dedicated flex service in the Prince William Community, which will first focus on service for persons with disabilities

§  This is a pilot program that will help identify new travel patterns and also prepare resources as OmniRide looks to replicate improved services in Western Prince William

§  Service is provided with small vehicles based on what you might see on MetroAccess, which serves the WMATA & Fairfax County footprint

Ø  OmniRide has re-tooled the route that travels the Prince William Parkway as the East-West Express

§  This is designed to provide more direct access between the two sides of the county with service to Woodbridge, the McCoart Building, and the Courthouse area 


OmniRide will have staff at the commuter lots this week and next week, on the new routes (and checking for passengers along the old routes), and in downtown Manassas to hand out new schedules, answer questions, and be there for passengers. 


For local services, which will see the biggest changes, OmniRide will have “demo routes” in operation this week so customers can try out the new services in advance of the change.  OmniRide will also have staff riding existing routes to remind customers of the change. “Future bus stop” signs have also been placed to raise awareness and attention for customers. 


OmniRide will also implement the Emergency Service Plan (ESP) for the afternoon/evening commute on Thursday, December 5, 2019 for the National Christmas Tree lighting.  This occurs every year because of the road closures and gridlock in DC on that evening.
